Ferro silicon is an alloy made of coke, steel scraps, quartz (or silica) by electric furnace smelting. It is mainly composed of two elements: silicon (Si) and iron (Fe). Silicon and oxygen can easily combine to form silicon dioxide.
Ferro silicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. At the same time, since SiO2 releases a lot of heat when it is generated, it can increase the temperature of molten steel and reduce energy consumption while deoxidizing. Ferro silicon can also be used as an alloying element additive and is widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Ferro silicon is often used as a reducing agent in ferro alloy production and chemical industry.
Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of steel, increase the magnetic permeability of steel, and reduce the hysteresis loss of transformer steel.
High-silicon ferro silicon or siliceous alloy is used as a reducing agent in the ferro alloy industry to produce low-carbon ferro alloys. Ferro silicon can be added to cast iron as an inoculant for ductile iron, and can prevent the formation of carbides, promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite, and improve the performance of cast iron.
Ferro silicon is easy to pulverize under certain conditions during storage and transportation. This is because the phase change of FeSi and FeSi2 containing about 34% silicon and 50-60% silicon causes volume expansion. Phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, aluminum and humid atmosphere in impurities will promote ferro silicon pulverization. When ferro silicon ingots are slowly cooled, segregation can also easily lead to pulverization. When ferro silicon is pulverized, it releases gases such as hydrogen, phosphine and arsenic, which can cause explosions. The latter two gases are toxic, so ferro silicon storage and transportation must be well ventilated to prevent moisture.
