What are the classifications of spheroidizers

Alloy spheroidizers are mainly used in cast iron (especially ductile iron) production. By adding specific elements to molten iron, graphite is promoted to precipitate in the form of spheres, thereby improving the mechanical properties of cast iron. The following are common types of alloy spheroidizers and their characteristics:

 

 

  1. Magnesium spheroidizers

Pure magnesium: It needs to be processed by pressure-added magnesium process (such as cored wire method and bell-shaped pressing method), but the reaction is violent and safety measures are required.

 

Magnesium alloy (commonly used):

 

Mg-Fe-Si (such as Mg5~30%, Si35~50%): the most common, such as Mg8RE5 (containing 8% magnesium and 5% rare earth).

 

Mg-Ni: Nickel slows down the volatilization of magnesium and is suitable for high-temperature molten iron.

 

Mg-Ca: Calcium can increase the absorption rate of magnesium and reduce the amount of slag.

 

  1. Rare earth spheroidizer

 

Rare earth silicon iron magnesium alloy (such as Mg4~10%, RE1~10%): Rare earth (cerium, lanthanum, etc.) can neutralize interfering elements (such as sulfur, titanium), suitable for high-sulfur molten iron or thin-walled castings.

 

Pure rare earth alloy (such as Fe-Si-RE): used for composite spheroidization or used with magnesium.

 

  1. Calcium spheroidizer

 

Ca-Si: Calcium has weak spheroidization ability and is often used in combination with magnesium and rare earth to improve the desulfurization effect.

  1. Composite spheroidizer

 

Mg-RE-Ca: It combines the strong spheroidization ability of magnesium, the anti-interference of rare earth and the stabilizing effect of calcium, and has strong adaptability.

 

Mg-Ce-Si: Suitable for low-temperature molten iron or special performance requirements.

 

  1. Other special spheroidizers

 

Yttrium-based spheroidizer (such as Y-Mg): Strong anti-fading ability, suitable for large or thick-walled castings.

 

Low magnesium nodulizer (such as Mg1~3%): used for compacted graphite cast iron or to reduce shrinkage defects.
