What are the functions of spheroidizers?

Spheroidizers, also known as rare earth magnesium silicon iron alloys, are additives that can promote the crystallization of graphite into spheres in ball-milled cast iron. They are generally used in the field of cast iron casting. In the process of casting iron, the additive added to the molten iron to make graphite precipitate in a spherical shape is called a spheroidizer. So what are the specific functions of spheroidizers?

1. Spheroidizers, vermicularizers and inoculants for cast iron. The magnesium, rare earth and calcium in the spheroidizer have strong desulfurization and deoxidation effects in molten iron.

2. Steelmaking additives: Light rare earth magnesium silicon iron alloys used in the production of spheroidizers, vermicularizers and inoculants are also used as additives and alloying agents in the production of steel and iron. They are used for refining, deoxidation, denaturation, neutralization of low-melting point harmful impurities (Pb, arsenic, etc.) and solid solution alloying to form new metal compounds, etc., thereby purifying steel.

3. In ductile iron, there are some elements that play an anti-spheroidizing role, usually called interfering elements, such as sulfur and oxygen, which are easy to form compounds with various spheroidizing elements currently widely used. Magnesium, rare earth and calcium can all desulfurize and deoxidize, and of course they will also be consumed in part. When the spheroidizer contains rare earth, its sulfide and oxide are very stable, with fine particle size, and it is difficult to float in the molten iron. Moreover, these compounds have a small mismatch with the graphite lattice and can be used as heterogeneous cores for graphite precipitation.

4. The influence on the white cast tendency of cast iron has two sides

Rare earth dissolved in molten iron has a strong effect on promoting the formation of carbides and is an anti-graphitizing element. However, adding a small amount of rare earth to the spheroidizer mainly composed of magnesium can greatly reduce the white cast tendency of cast iron; when a large amount is added, it will enhance the white cast tendency of cast iron.
